A functional dependency is a constraint on the set of valid relations in a database.

It allows expressing certain facts about the enterprise being modeled.

A subset K of R is a superkey of R if, in any valid relation r(R), no two tuples have the same value for K.

A dependency functional generalizes the notion of superkey.
